Oct 2024 - Kabosumama Instagram Fake Cat Kai Charity Phishing - $Unknown (Global)

"Kabosu (Japanese: かぼす, pronounced [kabosɯ̥], c. November 2, 2005[1] – May 24, 2024) was a Shiba Inu dog from Japan. Adopted in 2008 by kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato (佐藤 敦子, Satō Atsuko), she is prominently featured in the original Doge meme and the Dogecoin cryptocurrency."

"I live with a Shiba Inu, Kabosu, and three cats, all of whom are former rescues."

"The now-deleted fraudulent post was captioned with the ticker of a meme coin launched on Pump.Fun in advance, $KAI, with the description “A new family member has joined us! His name is Kai.”

The scheme cleverly mimicked Sato’s recent real-life adoption of a Shiba Inu dog, “Neiro,” which has contributed to the rise of the $850 million market cap meme coin First Neiro On Ethereum ($NEIRO).

By leveraging her platform, the hacker aimed to entice victims into investing in the fraudulent scheme seeking similar returns. However, after a sharp rise investors were left fighting unrealized losses in a rug pull plummeting the token’s value down 95%."

"The post also faked a charity initiative, providing a wallet address with the claim that all donations would go to an animal shelter."

"According to AggrNews, the Instagram account of Kabosumama, the owner of the Shiba Inu Kabosu, the inspiration behind the popular DOG project "Doge" meme, has been hacked. Kabosumama previously posted on her blog, stating that she was unable to log in. Additionally, BWEnews reported that the hacker is particularly cunning, having posted a fake update about a new family member. The hacker launched a memecoin ahead of time, luring victims into investing, only to pull out and run with the funds shortly after."

"Atsuko Sato, the owner of the famous Shiba Inu “Kabosu-chan”, disclosed the breach on her personal blog, revealing that the account, “kabosumama,” had been under attack with several unauthorized login attempts.

Despite having two-factor authentication enabled, the account was eventually compromised.

Sato warned her followers, urging them to ignore any suspicious direct messages that might seem to come from her. She also shared screenshots of the fraudulent messages in a follow-up blog post issuing a warning:

Don’t click “Like”! Be careful of DMs! Don’t click on links! I’m really sorry for the inconvenience."

"I can no longer log in to Instagram.
Even though I have two-step authentication

Please ignore any DMs from me or any suspicious DMs!

The blog has been updated."

"It was taken over on 11/17
I finally got my Instagram account back just now.

Those were anxious, painful, sad and difficult days.

Even if you have two-step authentication, your data can still be stolen.
Security measures are taken with the utmost care,
I will be careful.

Ladies and gentlemen,
We look forward to your continued support."

Further Analysis

Kabosu is arguably the most famous dog of all time, and the inspiration behind the doge meme, which led to dogecoin. The owner, a Japanese lady named Atsuko Sato, runs an instagram account which posts updates about her and Kabosu, who died in May 2024. On October 16th, 2024, the Instagram account started to post stories about a new cat Kai, and about a new charity fundraiser for a local animal shelter. These were not posts from Atsuko Sato. Instead, the instagram account was taken over by a hacker, who created the fake stories to pump a token they had previously created named $KAI, and collect donated funds for themselves. The account was recovered on October 27th, 2024, and it is unclear what the status is of catching the perpetrator or assisting any victims who lost funds.
