Following the token launch, the hackers then posted a series of bizarre and erratic tweets focused largely on Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan. These tweets ranged from contradictory statements expressing both love and confusion about Bannan, to a sudden change of topic praising Manchester United over Manchester City. The unusual nature of these posts quickly raised suspicions among supporters, and the tweets were deleted within an hour.
The token reportedly achieved a market cap of $900k at it's peak. However, the full losses have not yet been determined.
Sheffield United posted on Facebook to warn fans that their official X account had been temporarily hacked. They clarified that any posts, messages, or interactions from the compromised account were not authorized by the club and promised to keep supporters informed about when they regain full control.
In a follow up statement, Sheffield United said they had regained control of the account and removed all the unauthorized posts. They apologized to anyone offended by the content, clarifying that the hacked messages did not reflect the club’s views.
After the incident, the club resumed normal social media activity, posting a light-hearted message and a supportive video from former defender Jack O’Connell ahead of the play-off final.
